Chris Townsend OBE, CEO, Broadband Delivery UK
Chris Townsend OBE is the CEO of Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) within the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, overseeing the delivery of the government’s £1.7bn superfast broadband programme. Under Chris’ leadership the programme has delivered superfast broadband to an additional 4 million homes and businesses, with total coverage now exceeding 90% of the UK. Chris is also an Executive Board Director of DCMS. Previously Chris was the Commercial Director for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games where he was responsible for raising £2.4bn to fund the delivery of the Games. Before the Olympics, Chris was the Group Marketing Director for Transport for London (TfL) where he was responsible for the launch of the Oyster Card. Prior to TfL Chris held senior, high profile Marketing and Commercial roles at The BBC, BSkyB and Telewest. He currently sits on the Advisory Board of TUSK, a leading conservation charity with HRH Prince William as Patron. Chris earned a degree in Geography from Newcastle University, graduating in 1977 before becoming a graduate trainee at EMI Records.
